The University of Iowa's Threat Assessment Program is now accepting applications for the role of Police Threat Consultant.
The Police Threat Consultant provides violence risk assessments of faculty, staff, students, and visitors affiliated with the University of Iowa and Healthcare Enterprise. This position ensures efficient, effective, and confidential review when conducting violence risk evaluations while collaborating with departments across the University of Iowa, community partners and other entities as necessary. This position is owned and managed by University Human Resources with a dual report to Director of Public Safety who will serve as a tertiary supervisor only for specific tasks related in the capacity of a certified peace officer. Additional duties to include:
- Conduct timely and expedited violence risk assessments and provide opinions on violence risk.
- Screen and manage threat assessment reports to assess and identify levels of concern and priority, and use judgement to determine appropriate response which may include involving emergency personnel
- Interview persons of concern and other involved parties to Independently gather information from complex reports by utilizing investigative, strategic, and analytical skills
- Implement effective interventions to mitigate a violence risk.
- Effectively outreach, respond, and schedule client interactions.
- Consult with reporting parties utilizing empathy, reflective listening, and professionalism
- Effectively maintain documentation relating to consultations, interventions, and assessments.
- Carries out the agreed-upon consulting assignment in a professional manner.
- Collaborate with University community members to provide and connect individuals to community resources.
- Investigates harm, damage or threats of potential harm, or damage to persons or property by interviewing witnesses and conducting visual or audio surveillance or searches; detects and collects evidence; travels to other jurisdictions to investigate crimes that occurred on university property as necessary; filing of subpoena, search warrant, or arrests warrant.
- Arrest's violators or suspects by using minimum force.
- Completing law enforcement police reports and other appropriate documentation.
- Complete voluntary or legal searches to ensure public safety.
- Issue law enforcement specific safety interventions to include, but not limited to harassment warning or criminal trespass warning.
- Assure compliance with threat assessment and law enforcement professional ethical standards.
- Compliance to rules, regulations, and privacy requirements relating to FERPA, HIPAA, CLERY, and Law Enforcement sensitive records.
- Organize and deliver training to students, staff, faculty, and community on the threat assessment program.
Salary: $60,000-$70,000 annually.

About the Threat Assessment Program
Established by a charge from the Iowa Board of Regents, the Threat Assessment Program identifies, assesses, and manages incidents that threaten the safety and well-being of UI students, staff, faculty, and visitors. Together, the Assessment and Care Team and the Threat Assessment Advisory Group implement the program. Members of the Assessment and Care Team serve as primary contacts for UI community members concerned about behaviors that indicate potential harm or to provide support to individuals who are in need.
Required Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree, preferably in behavioral health, sociology, social work, or psychology, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- License/Certification Requirements:
- Iowa Law Enforcement Officer Certification; or
- Possession of law enforcement certification in another state and successful completion of all application and examination requirements as outlined in Iowa Administrative Code 501-3.8(80B); and
- Valid Driver's license is required and ability to meet and maintain UI Fleet Safety driving standards.
- Typically, three years of experience in criminal investigation (i.e. gathering information to meet a standard of proof of probable cause, filing of criminal complaints, subpoena, and/or search warrants) and/or independently gathering, connecting, and sharing law enforcement intelligence.
- Typically, three years of experiencing in working and managing crisis situations.
- Excellent case management experience.
- Experience in managing situations that involve individuals who are emotionally distraught or person(s) with mental illness.
- Demonstrate ability to meet deadlines, work with complex systems, balance multiple priorities, and to ensure a high level of accuracy in work produced.
- Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to effectively transmit, receive and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through appropriate communication methods.
- Proficient analytical skills including the ability to analyze a variety of data, determine validity, draw conclusions, and make recommendations.
- Ability to work with users at all levels of experience as a team member and as a self-motivated sole contributor and autonomously.
- Proficient use of Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, OneDrive, OneNote, and PowerPoint.
Desired Qualifications
- Master's degree, preferably in the field of human services.
- Familiarity with threat assessment best practices, principles, and case management.
- Possess an operational understanding of CLERY, FERPA, and HIPAA.
- Familiarity with violence risk assessment tools.
- Member of Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP).
