SUMMARY

Grand Rapids Community College is approved by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) and Michigan Sheriffs Coordinator and Training Council (MSCTC) as a Pre-service Basic Training Program (PBTP).  These programs prepare entry-level individuals with the cognitive and physical skills needed to sit for the Michigan Licensing exam.

The Police and Corrections Academy Director is administratively responsible for both academies. The Director shall work in conjunction and report to the Criminal Justice Department Head.  Duties and responsibilities may include planning, scheduling, budgeting, staffing, monitoring, and reporting approved program activity to Grand Rapids Community College and MCOLES/MSCTC.

Essential Job Functions

• Provides leadership in the strategic planning, monitoring for program compliance, and administration of both academies.
• Assures compliance with MCOLES/MSCTC standards and GRCC policies, practices, and procedures.
• Ensures that student records for basic training programs are complete, current, and available as required by MCOLES/MSCTC
• Ensures the courses required by MCOLES/MSCTC incorporate the training objectives and hours established by MCOLES/MSCTC
• Serves as the liaison between Grand Rapids Community College, MCOLES/MSCTC, West Michigan Criminal Justice Training Consortium and West Michigan law enforcement and Corrections agencies.
• Schedules, staffs, and conducts MCOLES pre-employment physical testing and reading and writing testing to meet MCOLES/MSCTC standards.
• Provides input to Department Head and Associate Dean to assure that course sequencing meets student needs and conforms to MCOLES/MSCTC standards.
• Assists the Department Head and Associate Dean with hiring of adjunct police academy instructors
• Maintains records of instructors’ certifications to teach specific courses, where appropriate (Emergency Vehicle Operations, Firearms, etc.).
• Orient instructors to the rules and requirements for the pre-service basic training program.
• Supervises and provides leadership for instructors in the Police & Correction Academies. Provide the MCOLES/MSCTC course objectives, relevant guidelines, training aids, and information on related subjects.
• Coordinates, schedules, and staff In-Service Training Programs.
• Conducts advisory committee meetings to assure compliance of GRCC Perkins funding and MCOLES/MSCTC requirements.
• Plans and schedules year- long schedule, catalog and curriculum changes.
• Plans, schedules and facilitates the twice-yearly advisory board meetings.
• Contributes to the growth and development of the Programs and the College by participating in team-based committee work, program planning, and other discipline- and college-related activities.
• Annually coordinate Perkins funding requests with Department Head and Dean of the School of Workforce Development.
• Adheres to College processes, policies and contractual obligations.
• Assists in the promotion of Program, Departmental and College activities and events.
• Promotes the department and program by creating partnerships with state and local communities.
• Assists the Department Head in the preparation of reports and other College required documents.
• Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of students from diverse backgrounds with a wide range of abilities.
• Maintains academy handbooks
• Provides leadership for the selection of candidates for both academies
• Maintains appropriate equipment and supplies for both academies
• Coordinates LCOPAT & EMPCO testing
• Completes all necessary reports as required by accreditation agencies
• Persons in this role are identified as a Campus Security Authority (CSA). CSA's will be trained and responsible for reporting Clery Reportable Crimes to Campus Police as required by the Clery Act.
• Regular attendance during normal scheduled hours is required. Being present is essential for serving customers and performing the essential functions of this position.
• Other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean or the Dean of the School of Workforce Development.
