POLICE SERVICES (IN-PD-IUINA)

Assist the Division Chief of Police in providing leadership and oversight for law enforcement and safety for the campus. In coordination with the Chief, develops, implements, and continuously improves a comprehensive operation that satisfies University policy and mission related to public safety. Acts in capacity of senior departmental officer when higher level officers are absent.

Fundamental Responsibilities:

• Works with public safety leadership to develop strategic plan(s) for campus/division operations and university-wide public safety planning; establishes and maintains plans and operations in compliance with university, state and federal requirements; reviews and interprets laws and regulations affecting the university and the preservation of public safety.
• Develops, recommends, and implements policies and procedures; serves in advisory capacity to public safety senior leaders and other university officials for public safety concerns and methods for increased efficiencies.
• Manages, trains, instructs, evaluates, and supervises public safety staff, including their work performance for completeness, accuracy and compliance within established university and departmental standards; consults with public safety leadership on operational and personnel issues and conducts progressive discipline as necessary.
• Oversees and ensures compliance with various local, state, and federal reporting requirements.
• Completes project assignments from Division Chief of Police and other public safety leaders (for example, policy construction and development, security needs/issues, etc.).
• Compiles and assimilates data, makes recommendations to senior public safety leadership, prepares statistical reports and provides analysis relative to the department's goals and objectives.
• Provides support for planning all major special events; athletic, social, or of a cultural nature; with focus on crowd control, traffic control and security operations; provides guidance and direction, ensures adequate staffing, space and facilities for the subsequent performance of duties.
• May contribute and serve on various university and/or local, state, or federal law enforcement committees.

EDUCATION

Required

• Bachelor's degree.

Preferred

• Degree in business administration, criminal justice, public administration, or a related field.
• Master's degree in a related field.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

• Eight years of law enforcement experience that includes four years in a supervisory/leadership role.
• Project management experience involving engagement and collaboration across a wide spectrum of diverse functions.

Preferred

• University law enforcement experience.

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required

• Possess a valid driver's license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University within six months of appointment.
• Possess ILEA (Indiana Law Enforcement Academy) certification within 6 months of appointment.
• Current and continued certification in university required courses such as CPR, AED, Blood Borne Pathogens, IDACS, etc.
• Complete and maintain all required annual law enforcement training and certifications as prescribed by IUPD, Indiana State Law, and the Indiana Law enforcement Training Board (ILETB).
• Current firearms qualification.

Preferred

• Graduation from advanced law enforcement management training (FBI National Academy, Southern Police Institute, or similar institution).
• Completion of ILETB Certified Instructor Training.

The role frequently requires the ability to remain in a stationary position and communicate effectively. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the working environment; handle or operate objects, controls, or tools listed above; ascend/descend ladders or stairs; position self to move at lower levels; and discern scents. The role requires the ability to lift and/or move more than 165 pounds. The role requires the ability to detect items in close proximity as well as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space of self; discern items in detail and detect how far away an object is. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
