The Deputy Chief of Campus Police & Safety serves as the second-in-command, providing leadership, oversight, and direction for all Campus Police and Public Safety operations. This position is responsible for ensuring a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors through effective supervision, policy implementation, and operational coordination.
The Deputy Chief directly supervises both sworn and non-sworn officers and supports the Chief/Director in advancing departmental priorities, ensuring regulatory compliance, and enhancing emergency preparedness efforts. The position promotes a professional, community-oriented policing model and fosters positive engagement with campus stakeholders.
The Deputy Chief demonstrates leadership that reflects an understanding of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and the ability to adapt communication and management styles to a multicultural campus environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The following are the functions essential to performing this job:
1. Serve as the Incident Commander for College emergencies in the absence of the Chief or until relieved by another authority.
2. Serve as the Campus Police & Safety representative for College meetings, activities, and local events in the absence of the Chief.
3. Ensure safe and secure College facilities and oversee the protection of the physical assets of the College.
4. Implement all College Campus Police & Safety plans, policies and procedures, and develop systems and procedures to meet changing physical, legal, and personnel conditions at the College.
5. Provide interface and coordination with emergency response agencies of the local law enforcement, fire, and EMS.
6. Develop and conduct College-wide training on Campus Police & safety processes and protocols in conjunction with the Chief.
7. Manage the administrative operations of the Campus Police & Safety Office, including scheduling of staff, approving leave requests, monitoring activity with consistent patrols, and timely responses to and reporting of incidents and College emergencies.
8. Hire, train, and supervise Campus Police and Public Safety Officers, and conduct performance appraisals for all direct reports, to include the development and update of the Field Officer Training Manual.
9. Develop processes and procedures to ensure maintenance of accurate records for tracking and reporting in conjunction with the Chief.
10. Assist the Chief/Director of Campus Police & Safety with the timely preparation of the Annual Security Report (per Clery), and other federal and state reports, and annual reports.
11. Ensure all issues related to safety technologies are reported to the Public Safety Systems Technician as needed.
12. Serve as a member of the College Safety and Crisis Management Team (CSCMT).
13. Assist with special events and serve as a crowd manager as needed.
14. Direct and participate in criminal investigations, as needed.
15. Oversee the enforcement of parking regulations at the main campus and Monroe Center.
16. Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional Requirements:
· Must pass a state background check as required by MSP Licensing.
· Must pass a drug (CDS) screen. (Pre-employment, post-offer drug test)
· Successful completion of a criminal background check that includes: no felony convictions, including guilty pleas or nolo contendere pleas to felony charges or any misdemeanor involving drug or weapons, criminal violations, theft, or other misdemeanors involving moral turpitude, and acts of dishonesty.
· Uniformed officer position: uniform provided by Frederick Community College.
Salary: $90,000 - $100,000 annually
