Police Officers are the primary representatives of the University of California Police Department, directly responsible for delivery of public safety and law enforcement services on and near the campus and other properties owned, controlled or occupied by the University.
Police Officers work under the supervision of, and report directly to, a Sergeant of Police or Lieutenant. Police Officers must work independently as well as collaboratively, carrying out instructions and self-initiating activity in a manner consistent with law, regulations, department policies and standard procedures.
Police Officers engage in preventative patrols on foot, bicycle, motorcycle, and by vehicle, and respond to calls for service from University affiliates and the general public. They make arrests, conduct thorough investigations, prepare necessary documentation and testify in court. They maintain custody of and arrange for the proper disposition of evidence, contraband and lost and found property. Police Officers may work with civilian and other law enforcement agencies to provide for security and safety of persons and property at University ceremonies and events, and serve as a proactive resource to a uniquely diverse community.
The incumbent demonstrates a detailed and fundamental knowledge of modern police methods, practices and techniques with particular emphasis on the university environment; skills in working as part of a diverse team; ability to motivate others to effectively achieve department goals and objectives; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with department members, neighboring agencies, and the campus community; possess excellent interpersonal skills and organizational skills; the ability to effectively communicate, orally and in writing to all levels of the organization; knowledge of relevant university-wide police policies and procedures; a strong commitment to cultural, gender and racial diversity, professional ethics and integrity, and understanding of and commitment to community-oriented policing, a self-starting and self-motivated work ethic, and a reliable attendance record.
Police Officers may routinely work evening, night and weekend shifts, and all officers can be required to work mandatory overtime assignments, to attend off-site training and to provide mutual aid to other agencies or locations, based on the needs of the department, and with little or no notice.

JOB DUTIES 60% Patrol and Investigation Duties/Responsibilities:
Respond to calls related to the protection of life and property, traffic collisions, and other emergencies. Respond calmly and constructively when faced with opposition or working under conditions of stress.
Initiate police action when necessary; use authority fairly and equitable.
Prevent and suppress crime. Manage conflict effectively, and deescalate situations when appropriate.
Make arrests and search, fingerprint and transport prisoners.
Conduct missing person investigations.
Conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations of criminal incidents, disturbances, hazardous incidents, vehicle collisions, casualties, threat assessments, vulnerability assessments, and other investigations as assigned.
Enforce federal and state laws, and University regulations.
Locate, collect and preserve evidence and found property. Interview victims, complainants, and witnesses. Interview and interrogate suspects. Check campus buildings, grounds and facilities for physical security and hazardous conditions and report deficiencies.
Direct traffic, enforce traffic regulations, and write citations.
Prepare well written and computer generated reports.
Plan and execute patrol operations to provide security or tactical response to crime. Develop logical plans, evaluating alternatives and anticipating risks, obstacles, and likely consequences.
Serve warrants and subpoenas.
Execute assigned duties pursuant to University and police policy and procedures.
Analyze situations and take quick, effective, and reasonable action to prevent injury, loss of life, or destruction of property. Make decisions under emerging conditions and intense time constraints with limited or conflicting information.
Adhere to federal, state and local laws and ordinances pertaining to apprehension, arrest and prosecution of persons, rules of search, seizure and evidences, departmental rules and regulations and employment.
Apply knowledge and understanding of criminal justice system, criminal law, modern police methods and procedures, including but not limited to apprehension and arrest, criminal investigations, collection and presentation of evidence, and police record keeping in daily activities.
Maintain confidentiality requirements of law enforcement information and personnel matters.
Apply crowd management, intervention and control tactics.
Understand and utilize the Incident Command System.
Comply with Jeanne Clery Act Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.
Perform actions according to laws pertaining to civil liability and privacy.
Participate in on-the-job training or job related courses as mandated by policy, law, and/or the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (CA-POST).
Participate and attend department firearms, impact weapons, defensive tactics, and other specialized scheduled training and maintain proficiency.
Maintain POST training certification through Advanced Officer Training.
Participate and/or receive roll call training and online training.
Act as a liaison between the department and other law enforcement agencies within the county and state, University units and community task forces and groups as required.
Maintain a professional working relationship with other law enforcement agencies, organizations and businesses through planning and coordination of mutual, available resources.
Effectively motivate in the development of others through training or mentoring.
Prepare cases for court, including meeting with District Attorney.
Present complete case documentation, testify, and present evidence in court and in other legal or administrative proceeding.
Perform other duties as assigned.
15% Community Outreach Services Duties/Responsibilities:
Conduct on-going training for department members and the community.
Work closely with the public and University units to educate, identify and solve problems.
Make community relations presentations to University affiliates and the general public.
Connect and build trust with people at all levels of the Police Department and with the community.
Serve notices and civil papers as assigned.
Euthanize seriously injured animals.
Provide information to the public relating to crime prevention, criminal justice system, suicide prevention, active shooter, self-defense programs, problem solving and other police related topics.
Conduct cash and security related escorts.
Provide information and direction to visitors and affiliates.
Provide 'civil stand-bys' and keep the peace.
Determine the need for and provide security and safety related services at special events or other short-term assignments.
Perform other duties as assigned.
5% Administrative Duties Duties/Responsibilities:
Maintain a clean work environment.
Complete daily, monthly, overtime and special event logs.
Complete event evaluations.
Research and write reports regarding legal issues, police procedures, technical equipment, training outlines and curriculum, and other law enforcement related matters.
Investigate and report violations of the campus codes of conduct for students, staff and faculty.
Assist with streamlining department processes to conserve staff time and monetary expense, and to improve service within and outside the department.
Perform other duties as assigned.
5% Core Function: Other Duties as Assigned Duties/Responsibilities:
Specialty assignments such as Officer in Charge, Investigator/Detective, Field Training Officer and those as described in the Statewide Policy and Procedures may be assigned at the discretion of the Chief of Police.

Currently employed as a peace officer for at least 2 years.
A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Prior law enforcement experience with the University of California or higher education setting.
Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire.
Must be U.S. citizen.
Must pass background investigation to ensure applicant is of good moral character [GC 1031(d)] and free of any physical, emotional, or mental conditions that might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer [GC1031(f)] so that nothing in his/her background is inconsistent with performing peace officer duties. The background investigation is also conducted to ensure that the applicant meets the minimum selection requirements of Commission Regulation 1953 and Government Code Section 1031. Applicant will be subjected to an identity/fingerprint check and criminal history check; Felony convictions or certain misdemeanor convictions that are disqualifying per CA GC sections 1029, 1030, 1031 (c), California Penal Code section 29805, and 18 USC 922 (d) (9); physical ability testing, drug screening, medical screening, psychological testing, treadmill stress test, and may be subject to a deception detection examination such as a polygraph or voice stress test, and/or a pre-offer personality test.
Must pass comprehensive medical and psychological pre-placement examinations as established by the University, state and federal law for Police Officers.
Must be a high school graduate or possess a GED (score of 40 or higher on individual sub-tests and a total score of 225 or higher).
Must possess a current California POST Basic Certificate issued by the Commission on Peace Officers' Standards and Training OR possess a POST Academy Certificate, OR be currently enrolled in a CA POST law enforcement academy with an anticipated graduation within the next six( 6) months. Those awarded a POST Basic Certificate and have a three-year or longer break in service must have a current certificate through a POST requalification course.
Must possess a valid Class C California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record.
Must participate in Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) Pull Program.
Ability to work a varied schedule, including nights, weekends and holidays; work 8, 10 or 12 hour shifts, work an alternative schedule; work assigned overtime.
Ability to work outside in all weather conditions.
Must have vision of 20/100 correctable to 20/30, with normal color vision.
Body weight must be proportional to height.
Must wear uniform and equipment including but not limited to: utility belt, hand gun, ammunition, baton, flashlight, and handcuffs and wear Kevlar vest at all times.
Ability to perform duties while sitting, standing, walking or running intermittently throughout shift; climb fences, stairs, barricades, ladders or traverse uneven terrain; repeatedly kneel, bend, or stoop; intermittently push, pull, and use force to move objects; constantly reach, handle, or grasp various objects.
