Job Summary
This position is part of BSWH Public Safety and aims to become a sworn police officer. A Police Officer Apprentice is not yet sworn and licensed by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE). They must attend an authorized police academy assigned by the department. After completing the academy and passing the TCOLE exam, the apprentice becomes a police officer. They then proceed with field training with BSWH Public Safety.
Essential Functions of the Role
Attends approved Basic Peace Officer Course (BPOC) and successfully passing TCOLE exam within 180 days from date of hire.
Effectively participates in classroom discussions and group projects.
Maintain all physical and academic standards set by the academy.
Participates in the physical and defensive tactics of the training program, including firearms training.
Attends all mandatory department meetings and events.
Adheres to the policies and procedures set forth by the academy and BSWH.
Key Success Factors
Must meet all Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) requirements for a peace officer license. Must be eligible to be a licensed peace officer in Texas.
Current/Valid Texas Driver?s License with acceptable driving record.
Has never been convicted of more than a Class B misdemeanor. Has not had a Class B misdemeanor in the last ten years. Has no more than three moving violation convictions in the last 36 months.
Education Preferred - An Associate's Degree or High School Diploma or GED with 30 college credits meets the requirements. A High School Diploma or GED with 36 months in the U.S. Armed Forces and an Honorable Discharge also meets the requirements.
Candidates must have vision correctable to 20/40 binocular and normal hearing in both ears. They need to walk extensively, bend, and lift over 50 pounds. They must continuously stand, walk, or handle material weighing 20 to 50 pounds. They must work outdoors in all weather, drive or sit in a patrol car for long periods while staying alert, understand radio communication with background noise, and read and write in low light.
Candidate must pass a physical examination, including a drug screen. They must be tobacco-free. Incumbents face random alcohol and drug testing for continued employment.
Must have vision of at least 20/40 in each eye (with corrective lenses) for effective visual surveillance and correct identification of the environment. Candidates must not have moderate or severe impairment of depth or color perception.
Successful completion of selection process including but not limited to psychological evaluation, background investigation, and criminal history check.
Upon passing the TCOLE basic peace officer exam, the cadet will enter field training and be classified as a police officer.
Must have excellent interpersonal and public relations skills.
Must be able to react well in stressful situations.
Must be willing to work any shift for several locations throughout the DFW area.
Must have written and oral communication skills to communicate effectively with all levels, inside and outside BSWH Public Safety.
Possess data-based and creative skills to find solutions to complex problems.
Must be proficient using PC and various software applications.
