This is a responsible safety and security position reporting to the Chief of Police / Director of Public Safety, involving considerable independent judgment.
The Department of Public Safety is an accredited police agency, accredited by the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police, which exemplifies the Community Oriented Police Model, seeking foremost to prevent crime through a broad spectrum of interactions and programs within our Duquesne University community. In addition to Duquesne University police officers possessing full powers of arrest and criminal prosecution, Duquesne University provides an alternative justice program through the Office of Student Conduct or the Title IX Office. This is an armed, Act 501 private police agency rendering community service and law enforcement for our students, faculty, staff, guests, and visitors. Being an important part of a Spiritan Catholic community, our officers are required to act legally, honestly, morally and ethically at all times.
Individual must be available to work eight-hour shifts on either night shift, afternoon shift, or daylight shift and be available for recall to duty during emergencies, to attend court proceedings, or as otherwise necessary.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Preserves the peace and resolves any conflicts within the University area.
Conducts vehicular, foot, and bike patrols of University property and buildings.
Takes all necessary and/or appropriate measures to reduce the opportunity for criminal activity.
Responds promptly and professionally to calls for service.
Engages in activities that foster positive relations in day to day interactions with University community.
Receives and responds to various emergency calls (medical emergencies, fires, alarms, accidents, criminal acts, etc.) and determines proper response procedures providing care as a first responder in medical emergencies and mental health crisis.
Conducts preliminary investigations, submits necessary reports via the Automated Records Management System (ARMS), reacts to criminal activity and makes arrests as appropriate by enforcing all applicable state and local laws.
Attends court hearings as necessary.
Facilitates the movement of vehicular traffic on University property and enforces traffic and parking violations.
Maintains and increases proficiency in police and interpersonal skills by attending mandated training.
Performs other related job duties as assigned.
Completes other duties as assigned.
Completed MPOETC certification from an accredited police academy upon application.
Ability to meet legal and psychological standards for certification under PA Act 120.
No criminal history of conviction, plea agreement or nollo contrendre plea.
Valid PA driver's license with good driving history.
Pennsylvania State residency or ability to obtain it before the oath of office is administered is also required.
United States citizenship.
Minimum age of 21 years
For external candidates, one or more of the following is required: An associate's degree or a minimum of 60 college credits from an accredited college or university; OR at least four years (8,320 hours) law enforcement experience; OR four (4) years of military service with an honorable discharge along with at least (2) years (4,160 hours) of law enforcement experience.
Alternately, the successful candidate may possess any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essential job functions. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:
Ability to maintain the requirements of PA Act 120 certification throughout the course of employment.
Skills, knowledge, and abilities necessary for a professional police officer.
Ability to maintain a PA driver's license with good driving history in order to remain covered by the University's auto insurance policy.
Ability to abide by MPOETC and department standards regarding firearms and weapons.
Ability to maintain CPR, AED, First Aid, and other department mandated training.
Demonstrated ability to conduct self at all times within the lawful limitations of given authority.
Willingness to attend and successfully complete all mandatory in-service training, weapons training and required University training. Willingness to fully embrace training that enhances professional job performance.
Ability to use independent judgment, with a first-rate problem-solving aptitude and the capacity to think independently and evaluate situations while functioning within the rules and policies of the department and University.
Ability to work in a team-oriented environment.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; verbal ability to de-escalate emotionally charged or other challenging situations.
Ability and willingness to work various shifts, including evening, weekends and holidays.
Ability to be a self-starter; with a high-quality work ethic.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the University Community.
This includes maintaining a service-oriented approach when carrying out all duties.
Ability to act legally, honestly, morally and ethically at all times.

Ability to follow the direction and guidance of their supervisors and the department administration.

Willingness to join the labor union representing campus police officers within the first year of employment as required by contract.
Willingness to embrace community policing and 21st Century policing concepts and ideals.
Ability to remain free of habitual addiction of intoxicating substances or drugs.
Eligibility to carry a firearm and be free from conviction of a disqualifying crime in accordance with the Police Officers Education and Training Program of Title 37 of the Pennsylvania code.
Ability to satisfy the requirements of Act 57 of 2020 pertaining to background checks.
Ability to satisfy any other qualifications which may be proposed by the Chief of Police / Director of Public Safety.
