Departmental Overview The University of California Police Department provides a full range of law enforcement services in support of the academic and public service missions of the University of California, serving a diverse community of more than 43,000 students and 14,000 faculty &#38; staff in the vibrant City of Berkeley, at the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area. In addition to the traditional role of a police department, we also carry out a variety of proactive educational, outreach and crime prevention programs. At the Berkeley campus, we employ approximately 44 sworn peace officers, 70 full time civilian employees and 35 part-time students. We offer a wide variety of assignments and a public service experience unlike any other agency. Position Summary Security Patrol Officers (SPO), are full-time, non-sworn career employees of the University Police Department. SPOs provide high profile, uniformed public safety services on campus and other nearby sites owned or controlled by the University. SPOs provide premise security, engage in preventive patrols in vehicles, on bicycles, on foot, and preform other support tasks for the University Police Department. Responsibilities Handle routine and emergency calls for service and respond to certain types of alarms. Work at strategic stationary posts, in order to control access and provide public safety of other assistance to the public. Provide for the safety of persons and property at University special events and can be called upon to assist with transportation, booking, and searching of prisoners. Make written reports and issue certain types of citations as necessary. Report security violations or hazardous conditions, and are expected to take action to correct situations or to ensure that correction takes place. Shift work, including night shift, weekend assignments, and special events is required. Required Qualifications  Must have excellent communication skills and good judgement under pressure. UCIPD serves a daily population of more than 65,000 people across the University&#39;s Irvine campus and UCI Health locations in the City of Orange, Irvine, Fountain Valley, Lakewood, Los Alamitos, and Placentia.  Under direct supervision is responsible for the protection of life and property at the College of Charleston. Enforces the laws of the State, County and the rules and regulations of the College of Charleston.  Candidates must be 21 years of age or older to satisfy requirements for admission into SC Police Academy. A high school diploma or&#xa0;GED. One year of police or military experience and knowledge of the laws of the State of South Carolina civil and criminal codes and the rules and regulations applicable to the College of Charleston is desired. Must complete the South Carolina Criminal Justice Basic Police Training and be certified by the Law Enforcement Training Council in accordance with 23-23-40 of the Code of Laws of South Carolina 1976 within one year of hire date. Must have the ability to understand police procedures and criminal laws. Must be able to communicate effectively. Must successfully complete all mandated police training requirements. Must be able to monitor &#38; respond to audible &#38; visual security/fire alarms and observation devices.
