The Sergeant conducts and directs law enforcement operations in the field; manages the day-to-day activities of sworn police officers to ensure the adherence to policies and procedures, regulations, orders and laws; and provides leadership and supervision of a unit/team within the department by enforcing regulations and policies for assigned personnel. A Sergeant plans work schedules and strategies, advises and trains employees, facilitates clear and positive communications between subordinates and management, inspects and evaluates the work of subordinates, prepares and delivers employee performance evaluations, directs operations in the field, and conducts, coordinates and/or commands criminal, traffic, and personnel investigations. May also be assigned to develop and perform administrative duties. This includes the ability to stand for extended periods of time while in full uniform and carrying all safety equipment; the physical ability to maintain department standard proficiency at the range and in defensive tactics, both in training and in field operations. Must have vision of 20/100 correctable to 20/30, with normal color vision. Weight in proportion to height.  WORK ENVIRONMENT -External candidates and internal candidates from other UC campuses must pass extensive background investigation, including criminal history and identity check and have no felony convictions pursuant to Government Code Section 1029. Academy Requirements As entry level law enforcement candidates attending a basic police academy, recruits (cadets / trainees) are expected to demonstrate total commitment towards successfully meeting the academic and physical requirements set by the academy.  Throughout the academy, recruits will be expected to adopt a demeanor that encompasses pride, professionalism, maturity, and self-discipline.  Work ethic will be defined and serve as a guide to each new recruits&#39;s professional conduct.     Ability to prepare self mentally / physically to approach the basic academy with an eagerness to learn and develop the discipline and skills required to become a peace officer for the State of California.   Meet or exceed the expectations set by the Academy.   Ability to understand and accept the Academy chain of command.   Successfully pass approximately 41 Learning Domains and practical exercises with a score established by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.   In addition to P.O.S.T. testing requirements, the Deputy Sheriff Cadet must successfully pass numerous additional academy specific objectives in order for the recruit to graduate from the basic academy.   Recruits are required to attain an acceptable level of physical fitness during the basic academy.  In accordance with P.O.S.T. regulations, recruits who are unable to complete 30 hours of physical training during the first twelve to fourteen weeks of the basic academy must be recommended for removal from the basic academy.   Maintain a mature and professional attitude.   Engage tactfully and courteously with the academy staff and classmates.   Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of attending the academy.   While attending the academy, the incumbent may be required to attend additional training outside of the academy at the Stanford Department of Public Safety.   While attending the academy, the incumbent may be required to work special events as a Deputy Sheriff Cadet on the Stanford University campus.   Wear a uniform issued by the academy and the Stanford Department of Public Safety. Candidates must minimally possess extensive supervision level experience in leading and managing a law enforcement workforce; Cal State is seeking an individual who is well-rounded, with experience in administration, investigations, and patrol. All candidates must possess current management and advanced California POST certifications or eligibility to attain them within 12 months of hire. Candidates from other states should consider the extensive California POST requirements for certification of experienced peace officers. A typical candidate will possess a bachelor&#39;s degree from an accredited college or university--with study in the areas of criminal justice administration, business administration, psychology, or a related field preferred--or an equivalent combination of education and management-level experience in an agency of similar size and complexity. A master&#39;s degree is desirable along with prior University law enforcement experience and knowledge of University regulations. The annual salary range for the Lieutenant position is $100,000-$130,000; placement within this range is dependent upon qualifications.
