The Field Captain serves as a command-level presence during assigned hours, ensuring departmental policies and procedures are consistently followed. The role requires immediate corrective actions and sound decision-making to maintain operational efficiency and uphold the Department's mission. . Administrative and Supervisory Duties
· Review and correct paperwork before end of shift; document corrections for Shift Supervisor.
· Monitor special events and coordinate with Officer in Charge; supplement staffing as necessary.
· Participate in counseling sessions between supervisors and personnel when requested.
· Analyze incident reports and statistical data to identify trends.
· Monitor personnel assignments and communicate significant occurrences to Shift Commander.
· Respond to all vehicle crashes and use-of-force incidents involving TSUPD personnel.
· Convene meetings of on-duty personnel for planning and resource allocation.
· Conduct roll call training when feasible.
· Develop rapport with TSU community members and act as liaison when needed. Respond promptly to critical incidents, including:
· Serious injury or death on TSU property.
· Injury or death of TSU employees, students, or faculty (including suicide attempts).
· Active shooter or active killer situations.
· Discharge of a weapon or use of force by TSUPD personnel.
· Incidents involving TSUPD personnel resulting in injury or death.
· Vehicular pursuits (per policy).
· Requests for assistance from other agencies.
· Cutting, stabbing, or shooting incidents.
· Calls requiring additional resources or specialized units (e.g., MNPDSWAT, Hazardous Device Unit).
· Wear seasonal uniform and provide staff oversight, inspections, and operational evaluations.
· Ensure regular assessment of departmental efficiency and effectiveness during assigned hours.
· Provide maximum field coverage during scheduled shifts.
· Notify dispatch of work schedule, maintain shift worksheet, and check in/out via radio.
· Monitor radio frequency, maintain visible presence on perimeter patrol and key areas (e.g., Ford Complex), and establish immediate contact protocols with dispatch.
· Promote the Department's vision, strategies, and goals with enthusiasm and professionalism.
· Represent TSUPD in a positive, proficient manner at all times.
· Analyze complex situations and implement strategies that align with both short-term needs and long-term objectives.
· Gather and evaluate information to make sound decisions; resolve emerging problems swiftly and effectively.
· Support creative solutions and solicit input from others when appropriate.
