The UMBC Police Department is comprised of experienced, diverse police professionals who provide full-service law enforcement responsibilities, police communication professionals who provide a first point of contact for police services and a highly-trained civilian staff who provide support for the Police Department mission. The Police Department is the cornerstone of a comprehensive institutional strategy to maintain a safe environment for our campus population of over 14,000 students, 3,000 faculty and staff, plus visitors.
Position Overview:
The Police Communications Operator (PCO) handles emergency and non-emergency communications and greets the public at the Police Station.

Operating two-way radio, telecommunications and University Alarm System
Operating Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) System
Receiving and recording information regarding emergencies, complaints, requests for service, assistance and general information
Dispatching officers to emergencies and other requests for services
Monitoring campus security cameras
Greeting the public entering the Police Station
Obtain and maintain METERS/NCIC CN1 Certification
The ability to work overtime and shift work is required
Performing other duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED
Two years of clerical or other related experience
Ability to type accurately required
Must obtain METERS/NCIC CN1 Certification during the first three months of employment
Note: Additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Dispatch experience
METERS/NCIC experience
Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) System experience
Clerical or other data entry related experience

Salary:
Pay Range 08 (minimum: $45,375 maximum: $72,448) based on the University System of Maryland (USM) Pay Program.
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, Memorandum of Understanding, USM Board of Regent policies, internal equity, budget and qualifications and experience. Most salary offers will be close to the minimum part of the range.
The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
