This pooled posting represents a need to fill multiple vacancies for Public Safety Officers within the UNC Chapel Hill Police Department. Recruitment may occur at the varying competency levels, including Police Officer I, Police Officer II, or Police Officer III. Assessment of competencies will be determined based on the candidate's set of knowledge, skills, and ability to successfully perform the duties of the position, qualifications, certifications, and experience.
The main purpose of the UNC Police Officer position is to protect and serve the students, faculty, staff and visitors of University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill through law enforcement and crime prevention. The selected candidate(s) will patrol campus and investigate complaints and violations of State laws and local ordinances using the Community Oriented Policing philosophy. This person also develops and implements preventative patrol techniques and performs specialized duties to deter crime and promote effective safety and security practices.
Police Officer I: Positions at this level are entry-level with 0-2 years of experience in law enforcement. Additionally, candidates will have completed North Carolina's Basic Law Enforcement Training and be certified as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or have the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment. The recruitment salary for this level is $54,350
Police Officer II: Positions at this level are fully functioning officers with two or more years of experience as a sworn local, state, or federal law enforcement officer. Additionally, candidates will have completed North Carolina's Basic Law Enforcement Training and have at least a general certification from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education Training and Standards Commission (NC CJETSC). The recruitment salary for this level is $55,713
Police Officer III: Positions at this level are veteran officers with four or more years of experience as a sworn local, state, or federal law enforcement officers. Additionally, candidates will have completed North Carolina's Basic Law Enforcement Training and have attained their Intermediate Certification from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education Training and Standards Commission (NC CJETSC). The recruitment salary for this level is $57,400
Education and Experience:
Department prefers candidates who possess an Associate's Degree or higher from an accredited community college or university.
