Position Summary:
The University of California, Irvine Police Department is a 24 hour, 365 days per year law enforcement agency that provides contemporary law enforcement services including patrol, traffic, investigations, community policing, crime prevention and suppression, and site security services to a daily population of more than 65,000 people at the University's Irvine campus, the University's Medical Center located in the City of Orange, California, and the future Irvine Medical Center. The department employs about 50 sworn police officers, 64 professional staff, and 40 students who provide public safety services at both the Irvine campus and the Medical Center, located in the City of Orange, California, and at the future Irvine Medical Center. Working in partnership with the UCI community, we strive to provide services based on integrity, respect, transparency, fairness, and teamwork. Sergeants are assigned to watch commander roles, investigations, or special events. They manage a shift or work unit consisting of sworn and professional staff. These assignments may be at the Irvine or Orange campuses and may change.
Reports through Police Chain of Command. Provides direct supervision of one or more teams of police officers or other assigned personnel. The police department is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week operation. Receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the process by which to meet goals. Provides direction to staff according to established policies and management guidance. Administers policies that directly affect subordinate staff. Recommends changes to department policies and practices. Identifies risks and responds accordingly. Sets priorities and supervises workflow.

$56.25- $70.78 (Hourly Rate)
Required:
High school diploma or equivalent. Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited higher education institution.
Possess a valid California Driver's License.
Must be currently employed with, or within the last two years at the date of applications, a law enforcement agency described in Penal Code sections 830.1(a)(b), or (c) or 830.2 (a-c)
Minimum of five years or more full-time law enforcement experience as a sworn peace officer under California Penal Code sections 830.1 (a) and (c) or 830.2 (a-c).
Possession of California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced certificates and successful completion of probationary period. Must qualify for and obtain POST Supervisory certificate within twenty-four to thirty months following appointment, if not already in possession of. Possession of an Advanced POST Certificate.
Solid experience performing all aspects of police officer functions. Solid knowledge of law, regulation and University policy regarding public safety and law enforcement functions. Solid knowledge of modern policing issues, philosophies, practices and trends as applied within the University environment. Solid ability to communicate effectively in person and in writing. Solid ability to take decisive action based upon sound judgment. Solid ability to supervise and train staff in the relevant and necessary aspects of their duties. Solid ability to operate computers and other relevant or specialized technology. Solid knowledge of use and legal application of firearms and other police weapons, equipment or tools. Ability to work rotating shifts in all weather conditions and during extended periods of disaster or civil disorder. Ability to safely operate motor vehicles and possess a valid California Driver's License. Solid ability to credibly represent the police department in an official capacity. Solid ability to recognize emergency situations and take appropriate actions.

Prior University law enforcement experience. Minimum of five years or more full-time law enforcement experience as a sworn peace officer under California Penal Code sections 830.1 (a) and (c) or 830.2 (a-c).

Special Conditions Required:
