The George Mason University Department of Police and Public Safety invites applications for the position of University Police Officer. About the Department:
The Mason Police Department is a fully sworn police department that provides professional police services to a diverse university population of over 35,000 students, faculty, and staff. George Mason University is currently the largest and most diverse university in Virginia with students from all 50 states and over 135 countries studying in over 200 degree programs at campuses in Arlington, Fairfax, and Prince William, as well as at learning locations across the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Responsibilities:
Specific duties include providing vehicle, bicycle or foot patrol of the campus; responding to suspicious activities; resolving complaints; investigating criminal and traffic incidents; and providing first responder aid when required. Other skills required are interviewing and taking statements, making arrests, filling case reports, testifying in court, and assisting other law enforcement agencies. Required Qualifications:
Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
Possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
Have U.S. citizenship as set out by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).
Have reached 21 years of age by completion of academy training.
No conviction of Driving Under the Influence (DUI/DWI), Refusal to take Blood or Breath Test, Eluding Police, or Racing in the past two years.
No illegal or illicit drug use within the past two years.
No driving under the influence (DUI) convictions within the past two years.
No felony convictions or convictions of misdemeanors involving crimes of moral turpitude or gross misconduct.
Must not have been found guilty by reason of mental illness for any crime.
No convictions or restraining orders for domestic violence, or other disability to carrying firearms.
No criminal or unethical behavior unsuitable or inappropriate for a Police Officer as determined by the appointing authority.
Must not have been de-certified of law enforcement or jailor status by the Department of Criminal Justice Services, according to the Code of Virginia 15.2-1707, or similar status in other states.
Must not have any record of untruthfulness, falsification, or the intentional withholding of any information on any application, certificate, credential, interview, test, or documents/records associated with a position of trust.
Ability to successfully complete a physical agility assessment.
Ability to pass an in-depth background investigation.
Ability to successfully complete a polygraph, medical assessment, and psychological assessment.
Ability to be compliant with Virginia State Police/FBI/Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) policies.
Ability to perform law enforcement and security functions within the Department of Police and Public Safety.
Ability to successfully complete a course of instruction at a police academy approved by the Virginia DCJS (unless currently certified as a Police Officer through DCJS in the Commonwealth of Virginia).
Ability to successfully complete a mandated Field Training Program administered by the department.
Ability to work the assigned schedule which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
Must live within 75 miles of the Fairfax campus.
Knowledge of basic law enforcement concepts and fundamentals.

Preferred Qualifications:
Possess a college degree.
Currently certified as a Police Officer in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Previous law enforcement, military, or security experience.
Previous experience at George Mason University or another college/university.
Previous experience working with the public.
Trained/certified in Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training.
Both new and current state employees will be required to serve a one-year probationary period upon completion of law enforcement certification and/or employment.
