https://police.ucsc.edu/Job SummaryThe Police Trainee is the non-sworn entry training classification in to the University of California Police Department. Applicants selected as Police Trainees must successfully complete a CA-POST Basic Police Academy sponsored by the department. The Basic Police Academy is an intensive 888-hour, full-time course, which lasts approximately six months. The full-time intensive Academy requires a strong commitment by the recruit and their families.
During training, incumbents do not have police powers and are subject to all the policies and procedures of the University of California, the University of California Police Department and the police academy attended. Trainees may be assigned non-safety duties in the Police Department such as assisting in prevention, collecting information and data and transporting people and materials.
Upon successful completion of the academy, Police Trainees will be eligible to fill vacant Police Officer positions (TC: 5323). Promotion to a sworn Police Officer position is contingent upon successful completion of the basic academy and the final review of the Police Chief.
Upon promotion to Police Officer, the selected incumbent must successfully complete a Field Training Program (FTP) and a probationary period of no less than 12 months.

JOB DUTIES
100% Under direct supervision, enroll and attend an approved Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) basic police academy to be trained in the technical knowledge, skills and physical capabilities required to perform police service.
Read and follow the UCSC Principles of Community.

Facilitate clear and positive communications between department members, other public safety entities, and the community.
Abide by Department General Orders, directives, procedures, and requirements.
Abide by UC Santa Cruz policy and procedures.
Abide by University of California policy and procedures.
Comply with the university and/or department discrimination and harassment policy.
Maintain departmental standards as outlined by the Chief of Police or designee.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to understand, interpret and apply State and local laws and regulations, departmental policies and procedures, and other technical literature pertaining to law enforcement.
- Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency or hazardous situations and adopt an effective course of action.
- Ability to observe and remember facts and details of incidents.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to learn to operate firearms safely and skillfully.
- Ability to obtain information through interview, interrogation and observation.
- Ability to write clear and accurate reports on a computer using a basic word processing program.

Preferred Qualifications
- A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Knowledge of current police practices, protocols and procedures.
- Knowledge of the workings of the California criminal justice system.
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws applicable to the police function generally, and to the University of California police function specifically.

U.S. citizen.
Education and ExperienceMust be a high school graduate or possess a GED (score of 40 or higher on individual sub-tests and a total score of 225 or higher).
Licenses/CertificatesMust possess a valid Class C California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record.
Physical ConditionPhysical health, strength, and agility necessary to meet the physical demands of police work as determined by physical ability testing and medical screening.
Must have vision of 20/100 correctable to 20/30, with normal color vision.
Body weight must be proportional to height.
Special RequirementsMust pass background investigation to ensure applicant is of good moral character [GC 1031(d)] and free of any physical, emotional, or mental conditions that might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer [GC1031(f)] so that nothing in his/her background is inconsistent with performing peace officer duties. The background investigation is also conducted to ensure that the applicant meets the minimum selection requirements of Commission Regulation 1953 and Government Code Section 1031. Applicant will be subjected to an identity/fingerprint check and criminal history check; Felony convictions or certain misdemeanor convictions that are disqualifying per CA GC sections 1029, 1030, 1031 (c), California Penal Code section 29805, and 18 USC 922 (d) (9); physical ability testing, drug screening, medical screening, psychological testing, treadmill stress test, and may be subject to a deception detection examination such as a polygraph or voice stress test, and/or a pre-offer personality test.
Must pass comprehensive medical and psychological pre-placement examinations as established by the University, state and federal law for Police Officers.
Per the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA), this position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter. The selected candidate will be required to report known or suspected child abuse or neglect as defined by CANRA and will be required to sign a Statement Acknowledging Requirement to Report Child Abuse prior to commencing employment.
