Conveniently located on the west coast of Florida between Tampa and Fort Myers, the City of North Port is a vibrant, up-and-coming community and home to 78,129 residents. Covering 104 square miles, North Port is the largest city in Sarasota County and is accessible via I-75 and Tamiami Trail. The City operates under a Commission-Manager form of government.
Under the general direction of the City Attorney, the Assistant City Attorney - Police Legal Advisor provides a wide range of professional legal services to the City’s Police Department and Fire Rescue District. The position includes work on policies, contracts, public record requests, training, and legal support for these departments, and from time to time, for other departments.
The City recently authorized the third Assistant City Attorney position which is initially projected to be dedicated to at least 50% public safety work, with the vision that over time, the position will expand to a full time Police Legal Advisor. As the inaugural position holder, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to define the role and set standards, with the support of the City Attorney and Police leadership.
The ideal candidate will be experienced in legal matters impacting law enforcement including interpreting criminal statutes and case law, public records, interlocal agreements, and other contracts. The ideal candidate will be adept at handling numerous files in diverse practice areas, be detail-oriented, have excellent writing skills, and work well in a collaborative environment. The successful candidate should have considerable knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, and practices of legal research, in addition to substantive knowledge of relevant state and federal law and their application to the essential functions of the job.
A Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school is required, along with a minimum of three to five years of work experience as a practicing attorney, a substantial amount of which has been in the practice of law enforcement advising and/or criminal law. At least five years of criminal law experience is preferred. The selected candidate must be an attorney eligible to practice law in Florida with an active Florida Bar license and in good standing with the Florida Bar at the time of appointment.
The City of North Port offers a competitive municipal benefits package and an annual salary range of $94,954.79 to $142,431.87 depending on qualifications and experience for the position.
