The Jail Administrator is appointed by, reports to, and serves at the pleasure of the Sheriff.

Department and Position Overview:
The Jail Administrator oversees the Durham County Detention Facility by leading, planning, organizing, and directing a staff of 231 employees with a budget of $15.9M, and is responsible for the integration of complex services including inmate housing and supervision, intake/release, criminal magistrates, jail administration, central control, medical, programs, staff facilities, food service, laundry and facility maintenance. In 2020, over 6035 arrestees were processed at the facility which has the capacity for 736 inmates. Further, the Durham County Detention Facility offers educational and vocational programs. Qualified detainees can participate in work detail, therapeutic, and self-improvement activities. Key priorities of the next Jail Administrator:
prioritize community relations by educating stakeholders about detention and proactively responding to social justice concerns about detainees;
continue principles and practices that recently led to ACA accreditation and actively prepare for the next accreditation cycle;
increase recruitment and retention of detention staff in a high turnover market;
leverage internal talent by engaging employees in training, development, and succession planning to ensure excellence in delivery of duties, maintain employee interest and motivation, and prepare for succession opportunities that arise; and,
replace the competitive mentality that can develop between sworn and non-sworn staff to develop a shared understanding, respect, and appreciation of roles
Requires either a bachelor’s degree in criminology, psychology, criminal justice, political science or related field or equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities and extensive experience in law enforcement or detention services with five years of progressive management and executive-level leadership experience.
