Chief of Police

The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) is seeking an Chief of Police to support its missions of health care, academics, and research.  This position reports directly to the UMMC’s Chief Administrative Officer.  UMMC is located in Jackson, MS and serves UMMC’s multiple sites throughout the state.

UMMC is the state’s only academic health science center and provides the only: Level 1 trauma center, Level IV NICU, Children’s Hospital, and solid organ transplantation services.  UMMC is the second largest employer in Mississippi with approximately 10,000 employees.  UMMC has three specialized hospitals with 697 beds, up to 125 specialties, and an annual budget of $1.7B.

Position Summary:

To plan, direct, coordinate, and provide overall leadership of campus security and police. To ensure enforcement of all local, state, and federal laws and adherence to university policies and procedures.

Education & Experience: 

Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or similar area and seven years of related experience to include five years of law enforcement executive leadership. Master's degree, academic healthcare environment experience, and FBI National Academy course completion preferred. Experience cannot be substituted for educational requirement.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required:  Valid driver's license required, Mississippi Law Enforcement Minimum Standards Certification within one year of hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Designs, develops, implements, and manages services and programs which support police department activities. Prepares budgets and monitors expenditures. Plans, organizes, coordinates and directs through appropriate police personnel, UMMC police functions, including patrol, law enforcement, investigation, police communications, community and administrative services.
• Develops and implements departmental goals, objectives, policies and procedures; evaluates programmatic and operational; effectiveness and makes changes as necessary. Prepares long range plans for police and security services.
• Designs, establishes, and maintains an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish the institutions goals and objectives; hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates staff during daily work activities. Confers with hospital administrators and managers on law enforcement problems and assists in the development of innovative municipal law enforcement policies.
• Ensures compliance with applicable local, state, and federal laws, university policies and procedures, and other standards. Ensures compliance with the joint commission standards which administers accreditation programs for hospitals and other health-care organizations.
• Liaises with civic, educational, community groups, county and state prosecutors, county and circuit judges, institutions of higher learning (IHL), and other law enforcement and emergency response personnel to develop programs and discuss law enforcement and crime prevention activities.
• Informs personnel of changes in regulations and policies, implications of new or amended laws, and new techniques of police work. Provide training and crime prevention education for campus community. Evaluate training exercises for proper response techniques to ensure proper police and security services are being delivered to the institution.
