Job Summary / Basic Function Job Summary: This position coordinates the basic peace officer training course and works with the Director to coordinate and supervise daily operations/training. This position is responsible for teaching courses as assigned. This position reports directly to the Director of the Regional Police Academy. Hours vary depending on need and course schedule.
Major Essential Job Functions: Duties and Responsibilities:
Participate in the recruitment of students for the program, the department, and the Institute.
Coordinate and schedule the basic peace officer course.
Teach, counsel, and tutor students.
Recruit and supervise adjunct instructors.
Maintain computer based administrative and instructional records.
Administer entrance exam and process applicants for entry into the police academy.
Construct and administer assessments (both knowledge and skills based).
Ensure program compliance with TCOLE standards.
Conduct analysis of instructional program and make recommendations for performance improvement.
Prepare lesson plans, presentations, reports, and evaluations.
Assist with in-service training program as needed.
Represent the police academy in Institute functions and professional groups.
Maintain office hours.
Help coordinate and attend advisory committee meetings.
Attend workshops, seminars, and conferences to upgrade knowledge and skills.
Assist with the management and maintenance of classrooms and equipment.
Assist in the development of curriculum.
Perform related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications Minimum Education Required: Baccalaureate degree in the teaching discipline; an associate degree and demonstrated competencies; or Professional licensure with demonstrated competencies.
Minimum Experience Required: Required: 5 years progressively responsible assignments in a criminal justice organization Intermediate TCOLE Peace Officer License Basic Instructor Certification (TCOLE or equivalent)
Key Competencies: Ability to use a variety of teaching methodologies. Ability to coordinate and instruct skills topics of the police academy and police profession. Actively engage students in the learning process. Ability to work well in a team environment. Possess good verbal and written communication skills. Possess good time management skills. Maintain ethical and professional behavior. Aware of national issues and trends in education and law enforcement. Ability to perform basic skills in Microsoft Office applications. Ability to adapt to learning technologies. Familiarity with policies and procedures contained in TSUS and LIT Policies and Procedures Manual.
Job Conditions: While performing the essential functions of this job, work is normally performed in a typical classroom/office environment with moderate noise. Work is also performed outside in varying weather conditions and noise levels. The candidate should be capable of lifting 50 pounds and safely handling equipment typically found in a law enforcement environment.
