Towson University Police is accepting applications for a University Police Officer I position. This is an entry-level Police Officer Position. Under close supervision in the Training Academy, a person in this classification learns to perform the duties of a Police Officer and, once certified through on-the-job training performs these duties.
Enforces the laws of the State of Maryland, patrols designated areas by vehicle and foot to maintain a visible presence to deter crime, detect violations of laws and ordinances, identify wanted vehicles, persons and unusual conditions; responds to calls for assistance and emergencies; apprehends and arrests violators when probable cause exists; transports, guards and process people. Interacts and establishes rapport with campus community; testifies in court cases as necessary; conducts preliminary and follow-up investigations by interviewing and obtaining statements of victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informants and by collecting, preserving and processing evidence; performs searches; conducts surveillance; responds to calls for service, evaluate situations and determines the appropriate course of action; assists in crowd control; respond to emergency situations; administers emergency medical aid as a certified "First Responder".
This position is classified as Essential personnel and candidates will be required to work varied shifts including weekends and holidays.
High School Diploma or equivalent. Valid Maryland Drivers License Class C or equivalent with less than 6 points. Working knowledge of citizens and responsibilities; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to operate two way radios and telephones in a variety of environments; to show sensitivity in interactions with a diverse population; to comprehend laws, ordinances, rule and regulations, to sit, stand, drive, walk, climb, and run for sustained period of times; to lift, drag and carry heavy objects; to enter and exit vehicles frequently and quickly; to operate emergency vehicles under all conditions; to meet Maryland Police Training Commission and institutional proficiency requirements in the care and use of firearms; to work and wear personal protective equipment. Bachelor’s degree in law enforcement or a related field of study preferred.
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations to determine ability to perform the job. Employees in this job class are required to achieve and maintain certification as specified by the Maryland Police Training Commission and must meet the minimum standards of appointment for Probationary Police Officer as established by the Maryland Police Training Commission. Employees in this job class may be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.
A Criminal Background Investigation, pre-employment physical, polygraph, and psychological evaluation are required for the hired candidate and the results may impact employment.
