Job Summary: JOB SUMMARY: Leads the University's team of certified police officers to provide safety, security and protection for the entire SVSU community. Directs, manages and implements a comprehensive crime prevention, complaint investigation, emergency response, law enforcement and parking services program in compliance with all applicable laws, rules and regulations emphasizing a community policing philosophy to ensure public safety in the university community.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Maintains current knowledge of laws and ordinances pertaining to public safety on campus and regularly reviews, plans and updates as needed Police Department policies and procedures for crime prevention, law enforcement, and safety and security services including public safety and security, housing and campus security operations.
Develops and implements short and long-range strategic plans for University Police & Parking Services Department focused on community policing concepts. Plans and develops goals and objectives for university-wide law enforcement.
Directs the recruitment, selection, training, evaluation and discipline of police officers, administrative, managerial and support staff.
Oversees all aspects of the Annual Campus Security and Fire Safety Report as required under the Clery Act of 1990.
Maintains positive working relationships with members of the University community and attends University functions and activities.
Serves as a representative on University groups involving Student Code of Conduct violations and crime prevention activities.
Reviews and approves police reports/documents for external and internal purposes.
Acts as the department's representative for designated external law enforcement groups.
Direct the development and maintenance of record systems and legal documents that provide for the proper evaluation, control, compliance with State and Federal requirements and documentation of the Police Department operations.
Serves as a Title IX committee representative.
Provides training to employees and students on safety and emergency procedures.
Responsible for timely communications to the campus community on issues of safety and security.
May be required to perform any or all police officer duties, including detection, apprehension, and resolution of criminal activity.
