The University of New Haven is seeking a Chief of Police. This position is responsible for the overall leadership and management of the UNH Police Department including full-time and part- time officers, civilian dispatchers & parking officer, student patrols, and a supplemental non- sworn security force. The Chief is responsible for administering a 24 hr. safety, security and law enforcement program to a diverse urban campus as well as satellite student housing and other locations. The Chief is responsible for implementing the department’s strategic plan, submitting and administering the departmental budget and providing planning, training and administrative oversight.
The Chief of Police reports directly to the Associate Vice President of Public Safety & Administrative Services who is also a CT Post certified sworn police officer.
The incumbent will be responsible for the implementation and departmental compliance of departmental policies, procedures, programs, and activities by performing the core duties personally or through subordinate supervisors. The successful candidate must have an established track record in mentoring, promoting professional development, and training.
The position requires excellent verbal and written communications skills, a firm commitment to the tenants of student-centered campus law enforcement, including the fair and prudent administration of justice in dealing with student discipline and the UNH Code of Conduct. Successful candidate must be CT POST Certified, or eligible to be CT POST Certified prior to appointment. The successful candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills; be able to pass an extensive background investigation which includes psychological screening, drug testing and a polygraph examination.
A minimum of 15 years of responsible and meaningful law enforcement experience with at least half at the command level in a law enforcement agency.
Must be thoroughly familiar with the provisions and reporting requirements of Title IX, VAWA, and the Jeanne Clery Act and able to use and apply these to the day-to-day operation of the UNH Police Department. Valid CT Driver’s License is required.
Bachelor of Science Degree in a relevant discipline required, Master’s Degree preferred. Women and minority candidates are encouraged to apply.
