Serves as immediate supervisor for the Communications Center at UTPD. Coordinates day-to-day operations of Communications Center to include scheduling and timekeeping. Responsible for Communications Center technology management. Provides work direction for Communications personnel.
Immediate supervisor of Communications Supervisors.
Performs annual performance reviews in conjunction with Communications Supervisors and monthly quality assurance audits of all Communications staff.
Provides training and coaching for staff in informal or written form; meets with all staff bi-monthly; works alternate schedule as needed for Communications Supervisor and other staff development to be available to staff outside of normal business hours.
Applies disciplinary measures as needed in consultation with direct supervisor and following University and Police Department policies.
Maintains schedule for all Communications staff in conjunction with Communications Supervisors to ensure proper coverage for normal operations and special events; monitors unscheduled leave to determine patterns and authorizes overtime as needed to ensure coverage.
Provides guidance on routine basis regarding policy & procedure
Delegates non-supervisory tasks as appropriate to ensure proper functioning of the Unit and monitors completion of same
Serves as lead contact on-call after business hours for equipment, personnel or procedural questions. Communications Superiors may also be contacted.
Formulates new-hire and in-service training for all Communications staff.
Reviews all training documentation from trainers to assure quality, accuracy and consistency.
Formulates procedure documents or training aids as needed
Oversees operation of Central Alarm system and interacts with internal and external customers to assure occupant and facility security
Ensures vacancies as covered in conjunction with Communications Supervisors to ensure coverage and minimize expense to the Department.
Serves as Terminal Agency Coordinator to facilitate NCIC access and operation.
Serves as liaison to Knox County Emergency Comm. District radio system user group.
Serves as or delegates to Communications Supervisors the role of liaison to OIT Central Alarm working group
Serves on Emergency Notification Committee and acts as co-administrator for University mass notification system.

Co-administrator of records management system
Provides statistical data not available from canned reports in various Department systems
Lead point-of-contact, in conjunction with Communications Supervisors, for maintenance and operation issues with records management, radio, telephone, voice recording, Central Alarm and adjustable console systems.
Provides recommendations as needed for above systems as technology advances or systems approach end of support.
Work as IT assistant (with IT Coordinator) for Communications Center needs as required
Hours: The University of Tennessee Police Department operates three shifts for Communications:
The primary hours for Communications Coordinator will cover Monday – Friday 8:00 am – 4:00 pm.
First Shift 7:00 am – 3:00 pm, Second Shift 3:00 pm – 11:00 pm, & Third Shift 11:00 pm – 7:00 am. The Communications Coordinator may work any of these shifts or a variation of shift coverage.
Placement on shifts is determined by department need. Staff may be required to work during extreme weather / hazardous conditions, regular days off, or holidays based on the needs of the department. All UT Police Staff work some aspect of UT home football games regardless of the person's schedule.
