Job Summary/Essential Job Functions: The Police Officer will provide safety and protection of personnel and property, and eliminate and deter all criminal activities for the University
and surrounding areas. This position will patrol an assigned area to enforce laws and ordinances, regulate traffic, control crowds, prevent crime, and arrest violators.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Patrol the campus to deter crime and maintain building security.
Patrol parking facilities to prevent theft and vandalism and to issue citations as appropriate.
Apprehend, arrest, and file charges against criminal suspects when appropriate.
Regulate pedestrian and vehicular traffic; investigate traffic accidents and file preliminary accident reports.
Respond to security alarms and check for intruders and burglars.
Make building checks to ensure doors are locked, windows closed, and lights turned on or off as appropriate.
Provide security for special University events; provide security escort for students and employees.
Provide informal and formal guidance and direction to newer officers.
Assist or present training for law enforcement and community service officers as requested.
Provide assistance to the Community Relations Programs Unit as assigned.
Perform other duties as assigned.
High school diploma or GED; three (3) year of security or police experience.
Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age, and a citizen of the UnitedStates.
Must not have been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor.
Must undergo a fingerprinting as part of pre-employment record checks with the Federal Bureauof Investigation (FBI) and Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), and agree to suchfingerprints remaining on file with theTBI.
Must undergo and pass a police physical examination conducted by a licensed physician andbe certified as capable of performing arduous physical duties without hazard to the applicant orothers.
Must undergo a physical reexamination in connection with periodic physical fitnessreviews and attain recertification as capable of performing arduous physical duties without hazard to selfor others as a condition of continued policeemployment.
Must possess cognitive and analytical skills, as well as mature professional judgment; able to exercise independent and discretionary judgment within the parameters established by law, University Rules and Regulations, institutional administrative regulations and departmental policies and procedures; ability to make rational decisions and apply policies and procedures in a fast-paced and emergency environment.
Must be able to tolerate the stress of law enforcement, including dealing with traumatic situations, emergencies, and other emotionally tense and demanding situations; ability to deal with conflict and provocation while maintaining control of anger; ability to remain calm under stressful and angry situations utilizing tact and courtesy when working with students and the public; ability to work with all types of supervision and management styles..
Must be able to pass drug screen test prior to and during employment and as mandated by the State.
Must be able to communicate verbally in a clear and concise manner including accurate testimony while under stress.
Must be able to write clearly and produce investigative reports.
Must furnish evidence of completion of an approved recruit training program (in or out ofstate) acceptable to Tennessee P.O.S.T., or agree to complete such training in satisfactory manner asa condition ofemployment.
Must satisfactorily complete at least one P.O.S.T. certified school. Must complete an approved in-service training session appropriate for employee's rank and responsibilities eachyear at a time and location designated, and must complete the training in a satisfactory manner asa condition of continuedemployment.
Must carry a firearm in the performance of duty; and to qualify annually with said firearm in accordance with standards published at the time as a condition ofemployment.
Must comply with police appearance and grooming standards as set by Departmentpolicy, and maintain such standards as a condition ofemployment.
Must possess a valid Tennessee driver's license or a valid license from a neighboring state, ifresident of that state, and must maintain a valid driver's license as a condition ofemployment.
Must agree to work any and all shifts, including week-ends and holidays, asdirected, and in all weather conditions (heat/cold/wet).
