The purpose of this position is to direct, plan, and manage multiple large detention bureaus and functions. The position is responsible for the overall administration of the Office by managing its Detention Services and assists the Sheriff in achieving overall objectives of efficiency, economy, and effectiveness in public safety by providing overall leadership and guidance to the bureau(s) under the incumbent's management.

The ideal candidate will possess:
Minimum education and/or experience: Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration or related field and four (4) years' management and/or leadership experience (i.e., detention captain level or higher) in an urban correctional environment, including experience managing a large detention system with multiple physical locations and more than 1,000 inmates. An equivalent combination of post-secondary education and/or job related experience may substitute for the minimum requirements on a year for year basis.
Additional Salary Information: $120,577.60 - $183,040.00 Annually depending on experience

The Custody Bureau, staffed by more than 1,800 detention officers, operates five jail facilities across the County: 4th Avenue Jail, Durango Jail, Estrella Jail, Lower Buckeye Jail, and Towers Jail, employing a diverse staff of 2400 individuals. Included in the Custody Bureau is the Central Intake Division, Ancillary Services Division, Institutional Services Division, Occupational Safety Division, Sheriff’s Information Management Services, Transportation, and Court Operations Division.
The Custody Bureau is comprised of a 11,051 bed jail system that is responsible for the care, custody, and control of legally incarcerated inmates in a safe and secure environment. Primary services include booking, classification, inmate records management, detention, release, education and programing, transportation, and enforcement of those participating in court ordered programs such as Work Furlough and Work Release.
