Prairie View A&M University and the Department of Public Safety invite applications for the position of Police Captain. This position reports directly to the Chief of Police and is responsible for assisting in the administration and operations of the University Police Department. The successful candidate will be expected to plan patrol, public service and investigative functions or administrative support activities to include assisting the Chief of Police in formulating policy, developing goals and objectives and administering the department’s budget. In addition, this position will also be responsible for the development of cooperative working relationships and mutual aide agreements with representatives of other local public safety departments and work closely with public and private groups and individuals to explain or coordinate proposed programs, responses to citizen concerns or inquiries regarding police services and responses to inquiries from the media. Based on this position being a part of University law enforcement operations, patrolling duties and overseeing of patrol staff may be required. The University Police Department seeks candidates that have demonstrated experience working under the pressures of stressful situations and deadlines, as well as, the capability to evaluate a situation and make an effective decision using independent judgment. Demonstrated knowledge in writing and producing comprehensive reports, excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to maintain accurate records are essential. The successful candidate must be able to foster a safe working environment without presenting a direct threat to others or self. Must be able to develop, plan, schedule, and present crime prevention programs that meet the needs of the University and local community.
Bachelor’s Degree in applicable field
Five years of related experience in police service including related supervisory experience
Valid driver's license and Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Advanced Peace Officer.
Preferred education – Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice or related field
