Carnegie Mellon University's Police Department is searching for full-time Shuttle/Escort Drivers. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who thrives on safety and customer service. You will contribute to the department by providing safe, secure and dependable transportation systems for the campus community.
Core responsibilities will include:
Operating 24 and 44 passenger buses on predetermined routes, as well as pick/up and drop/off at student residences, university buildings, and off-campus housing;
Reporting any criminal or suspicious activity, including any incidents when passengers request medical assistance for ill or injured riders;
Notifying dispatch of any hazardous road conditions and any traffic violations or incidents;
Refueling, conducting visual and physical inspections of the vehicle, cleaning the interior as needed, and immediately reporting any maintenance problems or concerns;
Following all required traffic laws as contained in Title 18, The PA Vehicle Code, and all Federal DOT regulations and requirements for CDL operators; and
Abiding by all F.C.C regulations regarding the use of, and communication over, a licensed radio frequency to communicate with police dispatch.
You will demonstrate:
Work diplomatically, politely, and courteously with a diverse campus population in a professional manner; maintain composure while taking care of difficult individuals;
Ability to keep time schedules and maintain a safe and secure environment within the vehicle;
Good verbal communication skills, the ability to follow directions and give clear direction to others;
Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records, as well as follow motor vehicle/traffic laws; and
Strong reasoning and problem solving skills.
High school diploma or equivalent required;
Commercial Driver's License with Passenger Endorsement required;
Minimum 1 year of experience driving 24 passenger shuttle and 44 passenger buses required; experience driving in an urban environment highly desired; and
Computer skills relevant to email and time-keeping software preferred.
Tenure with CMU determines work schedule; less senior drivers are required to work evening and overnight shifts.
Weekend, evening hours and shift work are required.
Designated as an essential employee, may be required to remain on duty beyond normal shift and/or be available on a 24-hour basis to report for duty without prior notice due to emergencies or manpower shortages.
Will be exposed to the elements as well as various road conditions while driving.
Ability to pass pre-employment/pre-placement drug and alcohol test, as well as post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty testing, and follow-up testing as necessary.
Driver history check required and should be free of violations and crashes.
Must be available for call-out and willing to join the appropriate local/union.
