This is a recruitment to fill two open positions within the UC Irvine Police Department. Hiring will occur in the Police Officer job title code series which includes the following job title codes: * Police Officer (Title Code:5323) * Police Trainee (Title Code: 5324)
The hiring authority will determine the initial job title based on the qualifications of the selected candidate. Please reference each position description for responsibilities as well as skills, knowledge and abilities required/preferred.
If hired as a Police Officer: Under the direction of a Police Sergeant, a Police Officer Entry Level is an apprentice level specification in which incumbents have graduated from a California Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Certified Basic Academy training program, but have not received a P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate. A Police Officer Lateral is a journeyman level specification having completed the POST Basic Academy training program, have been or are currently employed by a law enforcement agency within two years of date of appointment. Incumbents perform under direct supervision of a field training officer and generally do not perform police officer duties independently until the successful completion of field training. Following completion of training, the Police Officer is expected to perform regular law enforcement duties including: foot, bicycle and/or vehicle patrol of the University of California properties (campus, medical center, residential areas and off-campus affiliated properties/areas), investigate and prepare preliminary investigation reports, issue citations, make arrests, assist in the prosecution of violators of law, provide crime prevention information and serve as a proactive resource to a uniquely diverse community.
If hired as a Police Trainee: A Police Trainee is a non-sworn training position. Under the closed supervision of UCI Police Department and Academy Staff, the Police Trainee will complete a formal, comprehensive California Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Certified Basic Academy training program; learn basic law enforcement legislation and principles, police procedures and techniques, participate in physical training, arrest and control training, firearms training, emergency vehicle operations training and other related work as required. Upon satisfactory completion of the training and graduation from the Academy within the prescribed training period, the Academy Trainee will be sworn in as a University of California Police Officer with full police authority.

Salary for the Police Officer: $36.34 hourly / $75,876 yearly (min) - $45.69 hourly / $95,400. Yearly (max)
Salary for the Police Trainee: $32.06 hourly / $66,941.28 yearly. (This is a set salary)
**Note: If selected for the Police Officer position, salary shown is the complete range for the position. Finalists will be offered a salary that fits within the department budget.
**Additional Specialty pay: Those that hold the following certifications will also receive specialty pay: Intermediate Certification = 4% over base salary/Advanced Certification = 8% over base salary
Total Hours for the Police Officer: 13 hour 20min work shifts Total Hours for the Police Trainee: M-F, 8:00a.m. - 5:00p.m. 2 Career Positions. Must have a valid California Driver's License and participate in DMV pull-notice program May be required to work shifts, weekends, or holidays. Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
