The off-duty Police Tactical Officer provides patrol services to the Homewood Campus, facilities and activities. They shall act as first responders to mitigate any high risk incident or event that impacts the Homewood Campus.
Responsibilities include uniformed patrols to protect life and property; offering proactive support of student and staff initiatives; development and maintenance of a positive rapport with students, faculty and staff; reporting criminal offenses and disruptions; enforcing State laws and Baltimore City Ordinances.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Actively participate in crime prevention activities. Respond to routine and emergency calls for various types of service and take action as appropriate to support the on-duty Patrol Shift as needed; Actively participate in high visibility foot patrols within the outdoors areas of the Homewood Campus while on the lookout for person(s) displaying the characteristics of an armed subject. Foot patrols shall be conducted exclusively within the Homewood Campus boundaries. Making periodic checks of parking facilities and roadways within the campus while on the lookout for suspicious unattended vehicles. Act as first responders to any incident or event that presents a high risk to the University community and quickly act to mitigate such incidents, including the presence of a suspicious or armed subject; maintain confidentiality. Perform other security related services for the faculty, staff, students, and visitors of The Johns Hopkins University as may be necessary. Provide law enforcement services as needed for the University's on-campus property, facilities and activities.

High School graduate/equivalent required.
Completion of a Certified Police Academy required.
Two years’ relevant work experience required.
Valid Maryland driver’s license required.
Currently employed by the Baltimore Police Department as a law enforcement officer. Preferred assignment to the SWAT team as an active and full-time member in good standing.
Preferred successful completion of basic SWAT training school conducted by Maryland Police Correctional Training Commission - certified law enforcement agency.
Successful completion of Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) or equivalent Active Shooter Response program.
Current MPCTC-certification with the following firearms; pistol, shotgun and patrol rifle.
Good oral and written communication skills including legible handwriting.
Knowledge of Police Department’s “Rules and Regulations”. Working knowledge of constitutional, State and Federal laws.
Employed by the Baltimore Police Department for a minimum of 2 years.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their ability to understand verbal and written direction, maintain a professional demeanor and restraint at all times, which includes stressful situations.
Must also be able to work independently in absence of a supervisor, be able to make observations and write clear, concise, and accurate reports reflecting these observations.
Must be able to properly and professionally analyze and react to stressful and hostile situations.
Must be able to interact with the general public, students, staff and faculty in a collaborative manner.
Must be ready, willing, and able to respond and take action to mitigate any high risk incident or event that presents a danger to the university community.
Must be willing to work in a collaborative manner with university mental health professionals in stressful situations involving university personnel.
Must be trained and certified to take actions in situations that are inherently dangerous (i.e. Bomb Threat or Suspicious package situations, chemical, or biological threats, active or armed assailant(s) etc.), Note: The preceding listing is not all inclusive.

Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work. Officer’s must be able to remain on feet for extended periods of time, as well as stoop, kneel, crouch, lift.
Pursue offenders, restrain or apprehend aggressive individuals and make arrests when necessary.
Run moderate distances and/or go up and /or down flights of steps; read, interpret, and understand University policies and procedures.
Withstand exposure to inclement weather.
