Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice or related field and two years of experience in law enforcement OR a high school diploma and six years of experience in law enforcement, including two years of experience in a supervisory capacity of Lieutenant or higher rank, required. Certification as a law enforcement officer by the SC Criminal Justice Academy required. Five years of supervisory experience highly desired.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of South Carolina civil and criminal codes and civil rights of the accused. Ability to work independently to carry out department programs in accordance with university policy and supervisor's direction; supervise subordinate personnel, including conducting performance appraisals; work under stressful conditions and make quick, independent and correct decisions in emergency situations; maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the general public; research and write grants; and research and compile Uniform Reporting and Clery Act statistics. Excellent public relations skills.
Reporting to the Chief of Campus Police, the Assistant Chief manages and directs the day-to-day duties of the Winthrop Campus Police Department officers. Coordinates, implements and audits safety programs to prevent and reduce hazards on campus. Serves as Event Services Coordinator, Departmental Quartermaster, and Department Training Coordinator. Interprets University policy and state/city laws; assists in resolving any non-routine issues that arise; conducts internal investigations; conducts major criminal investigations, as necessary, and performs all responsibilities related to prosecution; and oversees custody and management of evidence. Responsible for Uniform Crime reporting compliance and Clery Act reporting. Assumes the duties of the Chief of Police in his/her absence. Acts as liaison to the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy and the Winthrop offices of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs and Student Programming. Oversees campus parking requests and arrangements and reviews and approves all ride-along requests. On-call after normal hours and subject to call-out throughout the year. Performs other related duties as required.
