The City of Sierra Madre is seeking an experienced and committed police professional who possesses outstanding leadership, organizational and interpersonal skills to serve the Sierra Madre community. Under general supervision, the Police Sergeant is responsible for supervision, assignments, and reviews subordinates work; enforces rules, regulations, policies and general orders; advises and assists in patrol, detective, juvenile, and desk supervisory operations. Performs complex and responsible law enforcement supervision and planning. Sergeants use active supervision to ensure that officers adhere to the rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and mores of the organization in fulfilling their role in reducing crime. In addition, participates in the selection of assigned staff; provides, coordinates, and participates in staff training; works with employees to correct deficiencies; implements discipline procedures; supervises non-sworn personnel including Community Service Officers, Cadets, and Dispatchers; responds to major crimes, accident scenes, and emergencies and assumes initial command; instructs officers or detectives in the handling of non-routine cases; conducts studies of traffic problems and drafts new ways of curtailing traffic problems; responds to and resolves inquiries and complaints; and performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Although the ideal candidate would possess a bachelor’s degree in public administration or a related field, it is not required. A minimum of 5 years experience in law enforcement is required. A candidate with at least 2 years as a Field Training Officer is desirable, though not required. The candidate should have strong writing skills, the ability to foster good working relationships, and the ability to motivate and develop others, which are essential qualities. Minimum requirements are a High School diploma or equivalent; at least 30 hours of course work (formal training), in law enforcement, public administration or a related field. An Associates or Bachelors Degree is highly desirable. The candidate must possess a valid Class-C California driver license or higher, a P.O.S.T-approved supervisory course is required within one year of appointment to position. The candidate is required to have a P.O.S.T. Basic Academy certification; Intermediate and advanced certification is desirable.
Additional Salary Information: Intermediate POST Certificate shall receive an additional 5% pay over base salary.
Advanced POST Certificate shall receive an additional 10% pay over base salary.
Supervisory POST Certificate shall receive an additional 15% pay over base salary.
