The Police Captain plans, organizes, directs, and coordinates the activities of both the Operations and Administrative Services Division; coordinates divisional activities with those of other City divisions; and provides highly responsible and technical assistance to the Chief of Police. The next Police Captain will be professional, responsible, innovative, and dedicated.

•Develop and implement Division policies, goals, objectives and priorities. •Plan, organize, manage and review the work of two major divisions: Operations Division includes general patrol, traffic and investigative functions; Administrative Services Division includes records, communications, jail and other non-sworn functions. •Assume responsibility for a variety of personnel actions, including selection, training, performance evaluation, disciplinary measures, and dismissals; review performance evaluations of all subordinate personnel. •Conduct studies and analyze the operation of the Division; assist in setting goals, objectives and priorities. •Investigate complaints pertaining to Division activities and personnel. •Attend staff meetings; meet with subordinate personnel; assign and review work activities. •Prepare monthly activity reports. •Prepare and administer the Division budget. •Act as Chief of Police as required.
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree in police science, public administration, sociology or related field. EXPERIENCE: Six years of broad experience in all major phases of municipal police work, including three years as a Police Sergeant or higher level classification, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS: Valid California Class C driver’s license required. An appropriate, valid POST certificate desirable. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Must be willing to adjust work hours as directed or to meet operational demands.
Additional Salary Information: The City is currently conducting a compensation study for all classifications. Placement within the range will depend on experience.
